The incident occurred in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday when the a tusker, believed to have strayed from a nearby forest, wandered into the Netaji Nagar area in Teliamura .

The animal's sudden presence triggered widespread panic among residents, who were unfamiliar with such encounters and feared for their safety. Panicked people started running here and there.

The elephant's arrival came just hours after the town had hosted Mayer Gamon - the carnival Durga idol immersion. Thousands of people had gathered in the heart of Teliamura at Ampi Choumuhani to celebrate, and many were still out late, enjoying post-festival festivities.

The unexpected intrusion of the wild animal disrupted the joyful atmosphere and sent people running in all directions.

Forest department officials were quickly alerted to the situation and rushed to the scene. They managed to track the elephant, which had moved through the town's streets, crossing the Khowai River and entering the dry fish market lane.

Forest Department officials chased the elephant and the animal was eventually located in the Kunjamura area, where efforts are currently underway to safely return it to its natural habitat.

While the immediate danger was averted, the incident had raised serious concerns about the increasing frequency of elephant incursions into human settlements in the region.

For the past three decades, wild elephants have been making their way into rural areas under Teliamura and Kalyanpur sub divisios, causing damage to property and endangering lives. Several people were killed by wild elephants in the village areas.

However, the recent invasion of Teliamura town underscored the urgent need for effective measures to prevent such incidents and protect both human and wildlife.

The Forest Department came up with multiple strategies to minimise the man-elephant conflict in the area - however, the issue remains unabated.

Meantime, the local administration has called for heightened vigilance and urged residents to avoid venturing into areas known to be frequented by elephants.

Efforts are also being made to strengthen existing elephant corridors and to create awareness among the local population about the behavior of these majestic animals.

According to villagers living in the 'danger zone', rampant tree felling in the hills has shrunk natural habitats of the wild elephants. Besides, these majestic animals are facing food crisis near their habitats.

The Forest Department officials also agreed with this. However, the search for a sustainable solution to the problem is yet to be found. Moreover, intrusion of elephant in town area has added another reason to be worried.
