Raghav Jamwal, a two-time reigning national grappling champion, is preparing to lead the Indian national squad at the upcoming 2023 World Championships.
The highly anticipated event will take place in Warsaw, Poland, from August 21 to August 24.
Jamwal, who has gained recognition for his exceptional skills in various combat sports, including winning a bronze medal in the Muay Thai championships in 2022, is determined to guide the national team to success.
Reflecting on India’s recent achievements, Jamwal attributes their impressive performance at the Asian Championships to his unwavering commitment as a leader.
He proudly states, “Under my guidance, India secured two gold, two silver, and twelve bronze medals, securing a commendable third place in the overall medal count.”
Transitioning from the realm of Olympic sports to contact sports, Jamwal acknowledges the initial skepticism he faced from his family.
Recalling the early days, he shares, “When I decided to venture into a completely new sport at the age of 25 or 26, my family thought I was crazy.”
However, he credits his involvement with the Cross & Fight Club and the invaluable support of his coach, Siddharth Singh, and his sister, Ridhi, for shaping his successful journey.
Expressing his aspirations, Jamwal reveals, “I have already participated in two national competitions, and I am eagerly looking forward to the open competition at the ADCC Abu Dhabi Combat Club, which is likely to be held in November.
Although the national events for the year have concluded, there is still ample time for further preparation.”
Reflecting on the transformative power of combat sports, Jamwal emphasizes its humbling nature.
He recounts a pivotal experience during his training in Thailand, where he was repeatedly choked out by a female opponent within a span of five minutes, ultimately losing consciousness.
This humbling encounter fueled his drive to improve and became instrumental in his personal growth.
As Raghav Jamwal gears up to lead the national squad at the 2023 World Championships, his dedication and remarkable journey continue to inspire aspiring athletes, while India eagerly anticipates its representation on the global stage of grappling and combat sports. (Edited)
