Kailashahar (Tripura), June 27: A woman died, at RGM Hospital in Kailashahar under the Unakoti District of Tripura on early Friday morning, just hours after delivering a stillborn baby girl.

The sad incident has ignited public concern and conflicting accounts between hospital staff and the grieving family surfaced.

According to doctors on duty, the patient, identified as Rubina Begum, had not been receiving consistent medical check-ups, Moreover, crucial diagnostic tests were not adequately completed.

Detailing about the medical condition of the woman, Dr Chiranjib Deb of the RGM hospital said that Rubina had not been under regular antenatal supervision.

“She came with overdue pregnancy reports, and we had already advised her to go to the Unakoti District Hospital. Despite our concerns and her critical condition, the family insisted on keeping her at the hospital for a night. Unfortunately, the baby was stillborn and the mother suffered massive postpartum bleeding resulting her death.”

The husband, however, paints a different picture, alleging medical negligence. He recalled that his wife began experiencing labor pains around 1:30 am on Friday morning.

The husband said Rubina Begum was quickly moved to the labor room of the RGM Hospital, but by 4:00 am, he received the devastating news that their baby had been stillborn.

He claimed his wife’s condition rapidly worsened after delivery, marked by heavy bleeding, and she was then referred to the Unakoti District Hospital for more advanced care.

“My wife was bleeding heavily. There was no proper facility at RGM Hospital to handle her condition,” he said and added, “We were told to go to the district hospital, but by then it was too late.”

He appealed to Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha to address the present condition of healthcare in Kailashahar.

Hospital sources acknowledged the limitations of RGM Hospital, admitting that it currently operates without different facilities such as a blood bank and a fully equipped operation theatre.

However, doctors vehemently denied the husband’s accusations of medical negligence and lack of proper step while handling the case.

Dr. Chiranjib Deb of RGM Hospital reiterated that Rubina Begum had not been under regular antenatal supervision and suffered “massive postpartum bleeding.”
