Mumbai, July 24, 2019: Contemporary Rajput and Mughal-style miniature paintings along with folk and tribal art by Indian artists who bring ancient into the modern will be on display here from Thursday.

The four-day exhibition titled ‘Living and Inspired Traditions’ will showcase 70 artworks by contemporary artists who are continuing age-old art traditions and techniques that have existed and evolved in India over the centuries.

These artists have kept these ancient traditions alive, organiser Saffronart Studios said.

The first leg of the collection features works from the various schools of Rajput and Mughal miniature painting, and portray iconic themes and subjects including the ‘Ragamalas’, ‘Baramasa’, ‘Gita Govinda’, royal portraiture and mythology.

Among the notable works are a painting by artist Dhani Ram titled ‘Radha Krishna in Rain’ and Vijay Sharma’s ‘Lakshmana Pulling Thorn from Rama’s Foot’.

These artists prefer older techniques such as natural pigments, and are also adept at diverse painting styles, Saffronart said.

In its second part, the show will have folk and tribal art and textiles that are the face of India’s local art traditions and inherited from previous generations of the artists. Among these are “Phad paintings, Pichwais, Pattachitra, Mata ni Pachedi, Kalamkari, and Kutch Embroideries” by award-winning artists.

The show will present an ode to India’s cultural and artistic diversity, and is free to attend at the galleries of auction house Saffronart here. (IANS)
