Indigenous Traditions Hold Key to Addressing Climate Change, says Jyotiraditya Scindia in Agartala

The rich diversity of India’s indigenous communities has significantly contributed to the nation’s cultural and social fabric. Union Minister for Communications and DoNER, Jyotiraditya Scindia, emphasized this during his address at the state-level celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala on Friday.

Highlighting the wisdom of indigenous customs, Scindia remarked, “Had the world embraced the traditions and values of our aboriginal communities, the current climate crisis would have been far less severe. Nature would not have been as displeased with us.”

Janjatiya Gaurav Divas is observed nationwide to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dharti Aaba Birsa Munda, a legendary tribal freedom fighter and social reformer. While the central celebration was held in Jamui, Bihar, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the programme and laying foundation stones for several projects, the Tripura event witnessed a vibrant gathering of dignitaries, officials, and tribal community members.

“Our history is incomplete without acknowledging the role of indigenous communities. Many of them made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s freedom,” he said.

Scindia further highlighted the transformative change in governance since 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“For decades, the voices of indigenous people were suppressed. But since 2014, there has been a paradigm shift. The contributions of tribal heroes like Birsa Munda have been rightfully acknowledged, and significant steps have been taken to honor tribal communities,” he said.

The DoNER Minister pointed out several milestones, including India’s first tribal President and the appointment of Governors and Ministers from tribal backgrounds.

To improve tribal welfare, the government has launched numerous schemes. Key initiatives include the allocation of Rs 24,000 crore for the development of 12,000 tribal villages, the provision of piped drinking water, and the establishment of Eklavya Model Residential Schools to ensure quality education.

In his welcome speech, Tripura’s Tribal Welfare Minister of State, Bikash Debbarma, announced year-long welfare initiatives to mark Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary. He assured that the state government is committed to the socio-economic development of tribal communities by implementing new schemes and ensuring the effective execution of existing ones.

Debbarma emphasized priorities such as quality education, employment generation, and overall development of tribal regions. Debbarma urged everyone to contribute to the vision of Vikshit Bharat as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As part of the programme, development projects worth Rs 2,278 lakh were unveiled virtually. Beneficiaries of various schemes were felicitated and received cheques.

The event was attended by several prominent figures, including MP Rajib Bhattacharya, MP Kriti Debi Debbarman, Tribal Welfare Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey, Director Subhasis Das, and Joint Secretary to the Government of India Jotindra Prasad. A large number of indigenous people dressed in traditional attire participated in the celebration, reflecting the vibrant cultural heritage of the tribal communities.
