U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy: Tripura boys win by an innings and 49 runs against Mizoram

The four-day match of the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy cricket tournament concluded in just over a day on Thursday, with Tripura securing an innings and 49-run victory against a weak Mizoram team.

In response to Mizoram's first innings score 66, Tripura managed 179. Trailing by 104 runs, the visiting team could only muster 55 runs in their second innings.

Resuming on the first day at 163/7, Tripura lost their last three wickets for just seven runs on Thursday. None of the batsmen could anchor the innings. Tripura were all out for 170 in 62.4 overs. For Mizoram, Johan claimed five wickets for 61 runs and Stephen took three for 44. With 18 wickets in two matches this season, Johan has been in impressive form.

The inexperienced Mizoram cricketers lost all their wickets in just 25.5 overs, managing only 55 runs. Mapuia was the top scorer for the team with 27 runs, including two boundaries and two sixes. No other batsman could reach double figures.

For Tripura, Rohan Biswas took six wickets for 20 runs and Rakesh Rudra Pal claimed three for 14. With this innings victory, Tripura earned seven bonus points. The Mizoram cricketers will return home empty-handed.

Although Tripura's win at the Narsingarh Police Training Academy ground was expected, however, it raised several questions, particularly relating to batting performances.

Mizoram, having only recently gained national cricket status two years ago, is still developing its cricket infrastructure. Despite this, Tripura struggled to put up a substantial score against the northeastern state. Had Mizoram's fielders not dropped several easy catches, Tripura's score might not have reached 170. Consequently, the Tripura team management will have concerns about their batsmen ahead of the next matches.

Tripura will face Sikkim in their third match on November 20 in Rangpo. Sikkim's cricketers have been performing quite well in their group. If Tripura's batsmen don't improve, they could face difficulties against Sikkim.
