Tripura seized control on the first day of the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy cricket match against Mizoram, though their batting lineup struggled to capitalize against a relatively weak opponent.
Arkajit Pal stood out as a lone warrior, scoring a resilient 66 and providing some stability for Tripura at the Narsingarh Police Training Academy ground on Wednesday.
By the close of play, Tripura reached 163 for 7 in response to Mizoram's modest total of 66.
The highlight for Tripura's bowling came from Raihan Ahmed Arman, who took an impressive five-wicket haul.
Unless Mizoram stages an unlikely comeback, the match may conclude well before the scheduled close.
Mizoram's innings, meanwhile, was plagued by poor starts and relentless pressure from Tripura's bowlers.
For a while, it appeared that they wouldn't even reach 35, but Ma Puia showed some grit, scoring 31 off 68 balls with six boundaries.
Only one other player, Mala, reached double digits, contributing 12 runs. Mizoram was eventually bowled out for 66 in 31.5 overs, with Raihan Ahmed Arman claiming five wickets for 23 runs.
Shubhajit Das and Tanoy Mondal supported effectively, taking one and two wickets respectively. Tripura's reply wasn't without its own troubles.
Captain Debanshu Dutta fell early for just 6, while Shankhanil managed a steady but modest 18 off 78 balls, supporting Arkajit Pal in a cautious 21- run partnership.
Notably, the decision to include debutant opener Shankhanil Sengupta raised some eyebrows, and his performance underscored the concerns, as he struggled to make significant contributions.
Arkajit, however, anchored the innings, building his 66 off 145 balls with eight boundaries.
Later in the day, Rahul Sutradhar added a brisk 29 off 18 balls, hitting two boundaries and three sixes, while Deepjoy Deb contributed 17 off 18 balls and Arkajit Roy added 14 off 53 balls.
At stumps, Tripura stood at 163 for 7 from 60 overs. For Mizoram, Stephen was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 44 runs, while Johan took three for 60.
