Tripura fought valiantly but could not overcome the might of Karnataka, losing by five wickets in a nail-biting encounter of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 cricket tournament. The match, held at the Emerald Heights International School ground, saw Karnataka chase down Tripura’s formidable total of 185 runs with just three balls to spare.
Winning the toss, Tripura opted to bat first. Despite an early setback with opener Shridam Pal’s quick dismissal, the team displayed resilience through an impressive partnership between Samrat Sutradhar and captain Mandeep Singh. Samrat, in fiery form, smashed 55 runs off just 36 balls, including ten boundaries and a six, setting the tone for a competitive total. Skipper Mandeep anchored the innings brilliantly, remaining unbeaten on 66 runs from 41 balls, laced with five boundaries and two sixes. Contributions from Manishankar Murasingh (26 off 21 balls) and wicketkeeper-batsman Sharath (11 off 9 balls) further bolstered the team’s score to 185 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.
Karnataka’s chase began with confidence, led by captain Mayank Agarwal, who scored a steady 51 runs off 31 balls, including three boundaries. Rohan added a blistering 57 off 31 balls with eight boundaries and two sixes, keeping the scoreboard ticking. However, Tripura’s bowlers managed to apply pressure, leaving Karnataka at 155 for 5, needing 31 runs off the final 17 balls.
At this crucial juncture, Abhinav Manohar and Shubhang Hegde turned the game in Karnataka’s favor with a scintillating display of power-hitting. Abhinav smashed 34 runs off just 16 balls, including four towering sixes, while Shubhang contributed an unbeaten 20 off 9 balls with one boundary and two sixes. Their explosive partnership propelled Karnataka to victory in 19.3 overs.
Tripura’s bowling effort was led by Abhijit Sarkar, who claimed two wickets for 31 runs, but their attack ultimately could not contain Karnataka’s firepower.
Despite the loss, Tripura’s spirited performance offered glimpses of their potential, particularly with the bat. The team will aim to bounce back when they face Gujarat in their third match of the tournament on November 27.
