With the joint efforts of the Tripura Police and Childline officials, the child marriage of a 16-year-old girl, Tania Akhter, was prevented. On Saturday night, the girl's family was secretly preparing for the marriage. Upon receiving the information, Sub-Inspector Arun Debbarma of Kalamchoura Police Station and Childline officials took immediate action.
At 8 pm on Saturday, the police received a tip-off that preparations were underway to marry off the 16-year-old at Jahangir Alam’s house in the Boxanagar Ashabari area. The police intervened during the ceremony and stopped the wedding. It was revealed that in the absence of the girl’s mother, her father and aunt had forcibly arranged the marriage against her will.
The girl, a ninth-grade student at Sonamura Madrasa, is only 16 years old and expressed her desire to continue her education. She had no consent for the marriage.
However, her family had forcibly arranged her marriage with a young man named Nur Alam from the Ashabari area.
After stopping the wedding, the family was sternly warned that legal action would be taken if they attempted to marry her off before she turned 18.
Boxanagar MLA Tafazzal Hossain repeatedly has raised awareness at various events about the harms of child marriage, which has significantly reduced such incidents in the area. However, some families continue to attempt such practices under the cover of darkness, only to be thwarted by the proactive efforts of the administration and sensible people.
This incident highlights that coordinated efforts by the administration, Childline, and local leadership can effectively combat social issues like child marriage. To ensure the safety and well-being of underage girls, such operations must continue.
Preventing such incidents requires not only administrative action but also societal awareness. Local leaders, teachers, and families must work together. To make the "Beti bachao, Beti Padhao " slogan a reality, a strong social movement is essential.
