Preparations are in full swing for the 68th National School Under-17 Girls’ Judo Championship, set to commence on Thursday at the NSRCC Gymnasium Hall. The event will officially be inaugurated at 12 pm in a grand ceremony, but the medal matches will kick off as early as 9 am.
Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Tinku Roy addressed a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday highlighting the preparations for the Judo Championship.
The four-day championship will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Professor Dr. Manik Saha, with Sports Minister Tinku Roy and other key officials from the sports department in attendance. The city is already buzzing with excitement as judo players from 20 states have already arrived till the report filing. The remaining players, representing seven states, are expected to reach by Wednesday night and Thursday morning, as confirmed by the organizers.
Competitions will take place across nine categories, with athletes battling it out for glory. The event has been widely promoted and campaigned across the city to attract attention, and the sports department has ensured meticulous planning to avoid any disruptions.
To oversee the championship, 11 officials from the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) are on-site, ensuring the smooth execution of the event.
The Tripura state team is fully geared up to make its mark in the competition. Representing the state are talented judokas including Menika Chakma, Jhuma Akter, Indrani Das, Tania Das, Dhirin Chakma, Bijita Debbarma, Monalisa Debbarma, Arpita Bhowmik, and Shayantika Das. The team is coached by Tanni Dey, with Chief Coach Dhiman Biswas expressing strong confidence in their performance.
“Our girls are immensely talented and have undergone rigorous preparations. I am optimistic they will deliver outstanding results and bring home several medals,” said Biswas.
Among the team, all eyes are on Tania Das, whose exceptional skills have made her the team’s standout hope for gold.
