Buzz Grows Around DA Hike Before Diwali for Tripura Government Employees

Close on the heels of the Union Government's recent approval of a 3 per cent increase in dearness allowance (DA) for central government employees and pensioners, speculation is mounting that Tripura's state government may follow suit with a similar announcement for its employees and pensioners.

The anticipation of a potential DA hike gained momentum after Tripura's Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy hinted at the possibility during a recent media interaction. He said the government, led by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, is actively considering the issue of providing DA to state employees and pensioners.

The Union Cabinet's decision, made on October 16, approved a 3 per cent increase in both DA and dearness relief (DR) for central government employees, bringing their DA from 50 per cent to 53 per cent. This increase, effective from July 1, has fueled expectations that the BJP-led State government in Tripura might announce a similar hike as a Diwali gift for its employees.

While Minister Singha Roy did not specify the percentage of the anticipated increase for state employees, sources suggest that a 3 per cent DA hike is likely. Moreover, considering that the central government DA now stands at 53 per cent, there is speculation that the state government might offer more than a 3 per cent increase to reduce the gap between DAs of the state and central Government.

Since the BJP took office in Tripura, employees have received a cumulative 23 per cent DA increase, with the most recent 3 per cent hike granted in 2023. Many believe that a new DA hike could be announced before Diwali.

With the festive season approaching, all eyes are on the state government. It is expected that a State Cabinet meeting will be held to this end soon and the Diwali bonanza will be announced.
