Tripura Logs First Case Under New Criminal Laws: Theft FIR Registered at Damchhara Police Station

Damchhara Police in the North Tripura District registered the first case in the State under the new criminal laws on Monday.

Notably, the three new criminal laws - Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) - came into effect on Monday (July 1) across the country.

Tripura-Damchhara-logs-1st- case-new-criminal-lawsAddressing a press conference, SP of the North District Bhanupada Chakraborty said, the first case registered in the State under the new laws is a theft case, numbered 15 at the Damchhara Police station today. 

Chakraborty said the legal proceedings for this case will be conducted under new criminal laws that came into effect today.

Notably, awareness initiatives and workshops  were held across the State to update the law enforcing agencies and common people about the three new laws.

Similar workshop and a press briefing was held at the District Magistrate's office in Dharmanagar, North District headquarters. The press conference was attended by North District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty, District Chairman Bhabatosh Das, Additional District Magistrate Biplab Das, Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shyamjoy Jamatia, officials from the Information and Culture Department, and various police and legal experts from departments related to law enforcement.

Addressing the press conference, speakers highlighted different aspects of the three laws. They also detailed on the changes made in the colonial period criminal laws to make those modernized and more suitable for the present era. 

The new laws aim at providing speedy trials and allow concerned persons to know about the progress of the proceedings. Besides, it also allows Zero FIR which will immensely benefit the victims of any crime. 

The speakers pointed out a new Terrorist Act has been introduced, and Anti-National Activities have been included with significant emphasis.
